🎶 Celebrating African American Music Appreciation
Month
June is African American Music Appreciation Month—a time to
recognize and celebrate the contributions of Black musicians and
composers to our shared musical story. Episode 72 is our tribute to
that legacy, shining a light on one of the most meaningful songs in
American history.
📖 The Story Behind the Song
Lift Every Voice and Sing
began as a poem written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson, a school
principal in Jacksonville, Florida. His brother, John Rosamond
Johnson, who taught music at the school, set the words to music.
The very first performance featured a choir of 500 schoolchildren
singing in honor of President Lincoln’s birthday—marking the
beginning of this song’s remarkable journey.
🌟 Why This Song Matters
Since that first performance, the song has become a source of
strength, pride, and comfort—especially for Black communities
across the U.S. It’s a reminder of the power of music to tell
stories, build community, and carry us through both joy and
hardship.
